How To Get Over A Broken Heart

Yes we’ve all been there and it doesn’t matter if you are 15 or 80 having your heart broken makes for a really hard time. Whilst you may well be unable to think of anything but your ex and your stomach will lurch around at the very mention of their name or visit to any place you ever went together, fortunately there are a few things you can do to get through this a little quicker.

By understanding what you are going through you can help accept and heal old wounds a great deal more quickly. In general this is what seems to happen:

Firstly, you relationship is anything but steady, fights, hurtful comments, and arguments about even trivial matters are becoming very common place and are more than likely a result of some deeper more important issues.

Secondly, the break-up. Things hit rock bottom and one or the other of you decides that is it, they have had enough and they want out. This is the realisation stage when you start to acknowledge that you are single again, you are not with them anymore and you can’t even go around for a cup of tea anymore. Resist the temptation to get in touch with them, remember the relationship ended for a reason! Now you want to know how to get over a broken heart not how to make the pain last longer!

Thirdly and this is the most difficult it sinks in that you are single. You peruse all your old photos of them lovingly and listen to favourite songs you listened to with them and all of those feelings keep coming flooding back and you can’t shake them off. In some ways your life feels like it has come to an end. However believe me that is not the case, your life will some back to normal again and things will get a whole lot better given time. Whatever you do though do not bottle up your feelings, let them out, crying is no bad thing either!

Fourthly, you will experience the anger at how they treated you even after all you did for them, how could they be so callous with your feelings. You begin to feel bitter but however you do start to see through some of their behaviours that before you though were cute but now you realise they were just annoying you just bought into the at the time. You start to stop wasting your days mulling over them and begin going out more and start getting yourself busy and focussing on new things again. Overtime you realise that feeling sorry for yourself really gets you no-where and you muster the strength to start living again.

Fifthly, you start noticing other people once more and you know it doesn’t feel too bad either. That guy or girl who smiles at you everyday actually is really cute, how could I have not noticed before, wow I think I even like them. In short you start to open yourself up to new possibilities and your world is opening up once more.

Finally, and you though this day would never come, you haven’t thought about your ex in a while and then you see them strolling down the road with new partner in hand and you actually do not really care too much about it. When you say hello to them and don’t feel nervous or embarrassed whilst they clearly are you realise that you are free again at last. Free to enjoy life and love all over again.

So, in my opinion that is how these things play out. It takes time yes but by acknowledging the stage you are in you can focus on moving to the next one. Sure it takes time and it can be very painful but you know what, you will be a better person for it and ready to enter a new and better relationship sooner or later if you so wish.
